Unlike alternative wood products, such as oak or pine, mahogany features very few knots or voids. This gives the wood a smooth, even grain pattern, which makes it ideal for fine furnishings and wood craft.

Mahogany furniture of Indonesia is handcrafted of tropical hardwood genus Swietenia. The wood introduced to Indonesia in 1870 using seed from the West Indies. Until now, mahogany planted and managed by public forestry company Perum Perhutani Indonesia.

Although classified among three tropical hardwoods species hardwood, mahogany wood is lacking in stability. It absorbs moisture from the air at highest level compared to other popular woods in furniture manufacturing such as teak, oak, etc.

Because of its instability proper construction and joinery are required when it used in solid wood furniture construction. The construction has to allow solid wood movement while it extracting and contracting through absorbing and releasing the humidity.
